Der Sinn des Blickes auf die Erde vom Weltall

Die letzten Jahrhunderte sind charakterisiert von zahllosen Entdeckungen: Kontinente, indigene Völker, Arten von Lebewesen, Galaxien, Sterne, die subatomare Welt, Energiequellen und vor kurzem das Higgs-Teilchen, eine Art subtiles Feld, das das Universum ausfüllt und virtuellen Teilchen durch Kontakt ihre Masse gibt, sodass sie stabil werden. Doch noch hatten wir nicht die Erde als Planeten entdeckt, als unser gemeinsames Zuhause. Wir mussten über die Erde hinaus gehen, um sie von außen zu betrachten, sie zu entdecken und um zu erkennen, dass sie aus einer Einheit von Erde und Menschheit besteht.

Dies ist das große Vermächtnis der Astronauten, die als Erstes in der Lage waren, die Erde von außen zu betrachten. Ihnen haben wir den Overview Effect zu verdanken, d. h. den Effekt, der entsteht, wenn man etwas von außerhalb betrachtet. Die schönsten Beschreibungen durch die Astronauten finden sich im Buch „Overview Effect“ von Frank White (Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1987). Diese Beschreibungen zu lesen, berüht zutiefst und führt zu einem Gefühl großer Ehrfurcht, einer wahren spirituellen Erfahrung. Hier sind einige Auszüge:

Der Astronaut James Irwin sagte: „Die Erde gleicht einem Weihnachtsbaum, der vor dem schwarzen Hintergrund des Universums aufgehängt ist; je mehr wir uns von ihr entfernen, umso kleiner erscheint sie, bis sie nur noch ein kleiner Ball zu sein scheint, schöner als man sich je vorstellen könnte. Das ein lebendes, so schönes und so warmes Objekt so zerbrechlich und zart erscheint verändert diejenigen, die diese Schönheit erblicken, denn man beginnt, Gottes Schöpfung zu schätzen und Gottes Liebe zu entdecken.“ Ein anderer Astronaut, Eugene Cernan, gestand: „Ich war der letzte Mensch, der im Dezember 1972 seinen Fuß auf den Mond setzte. Von der Mondoberfläche aus schaute ich ehrfürchtig zur Erde gegen einen sehr dunklen Hintergrund. Was ich sah, war zu schön, als dass ich es hätte fassen können, zu geordnet und zweckerfüllt, um nur Ergebnis eines bloßen kosmischen Zufalls zu sein; man fühlte ganz tief im Inneren das Bedürfnis, Gott zu loben. Es muss einen Gott geben, um das geschaffen zu haben, was anzuschauen ich das Privileg hatte; spontan stellte sich Verehrung und Dankbarkeit für die Existenz des Universums ein.“

Mit Feingefühl beobachtete Joseph P. Allen, ein weiterer Astronaut: „Es gab viele Diskussionen über das Für und Wider der Mondraumfahrt, doch ich habe niemanden sagen hören, dass wir zum Mond fliegen sollten, um die Erde von dort aus, also von außerhalb, zu betrachten. Doch letztlich hätte genau das der wahre Grund für den Flug zum Mond sein müssen.“

Durch diese einzigartige Erfahrung erwacht im Menschen das Verständnis dafür, dass der Mensch und die Erde eine Einheit bilden und dass diese Einheit ein Teil von etwas Größerem ist, der solaren Einheit, und diese Teil einer noch größeren, nämlich einer galaktischen Einheit. Dies führt uns zum ganzen Universum, und das ganze Universum führt uns zum Mysterium, und vom Mysterium kommen wir zum Schöpfer.

„Von oben“, beobachtete Cernan, „kann man solche Barrieren wie Hautfarbe, Religion und politische Einstellungen, die die Welt hier unten trennen, nicht sehen.“ Alles ist ein einem einzigen Planeten vereint, der Erde. Der Astronaut Salman al-Saud sagte dazu: „Am ersten und zweiten Tag machten wir unsere Länder ausfindig, am dritten und vierten Tag unsere Kontinente, und ab dem fünften Tag wurde uns die Erde nur noch als ein Ganzes bewusst.“

Diese Beschreibungen überzeugen uns davon, dass Erde und Menschheit in Wirklichkeit ein untrennbares Ganzes bilden. Das ist genau das, was Isaac Asimov in seinem Artikel in der New York Times vom 9. Oktober 1982, dem 25. Jahrestag des Sputnik-Abflugs, schrieb, der als erstes die Erde umkreiste. Der Artikel trug den Titel: „Sputnik’s Legacy: Globalism“ (Sputniks Vermächtnis: die Globalisierung). Und Asimov sagte: „Unserem Widerspruchsgeist wird die Sichtweise auferlegt, dass Erde und Menschheit eine einzige Einheit bilden.“ Der Russe Anatoly Berezovoy, der 211 Tage im Weltraum verbrachte, bestätigte dies. Ganz offensichtlich können wir nicht die Erde auf der einen Seite und die Menschheit auf der anderen Seite betrachten. Wir bilden ein organisches und lebendiges Ganzes. Wir Menschen sind der fühlende, denkende, liebende, sorgende und Respekt erweisende Teil der Erde.

Von fast jedem Blickwinkel aus auf die Erde kommt uns ganz spontan der Gedanke, dass trotz all der Zerstörung, durch die wir Gaia bedrohen, eine gute und heilbringende Zukunft gewissermaßen garantiert ist. So viel Schönheit und Pracht kann nicht zerstört werden. Wie Christen es ausdrücken würden: Die Erde ist vom Geist und vom kosmischen Christus durchdrungen. Ein Teil der Menschheit wurde bereits durch Jesus verewigt und befindet sich im Herzen der Dreifaltigkeit. Es kann nicht sein, dass Gott sein Werk auf den Ruinen der Erde vollendet. Der Auferstandene und Sein Geist führen die Evolution zu ihrem Kulminationspunkt.

Eine moderne Legende untermauert diesen Glauben: „Es war einmal ein christliches Greenpeace-Mitglied, dem in seinen Träumen der auferstandene Jesus begegnete und ihn zu einem Spaziergang im Garten einlud. Das Greenpeace-Mitglied akzeptierte die Einladung mit Begeisterung. Nachdem sie eine Weile gelaufen waren und die Artenvielfalt an diesem kleinen Ort bewundert hatten, fragte der Mann: „Herr, als du auf den Wegen Palästinas liefst, sagtest du einmal, du würdest eines Tages in großem Ruhm und Herrlichkeit wiederkommen. Deine Wiederkunft zögert sich schon so lange hinaus! Wann wirst du denn endlich kommen, Herr?“ Nach einer kurzen Pause des Schweigens, die ihm wie eine Ewigkeit erschien, antwortete der Herr: „Mein lieber Bruder, wenn meine Anwesenheit im Universum und in der Natur so offensichtlich ist wie das Licht, das diesen Garten erhellt; wenn meine Gegenwart unter deiner Haut und in deinem Herzen so wirklich ist wie meine Gegenwart hier und jetzt, wenn diese meine Gegenwart so sehr zu Fleisch und Blut in dir selbst wird, dass du nicht mehr darüber nachzudenken brauchst, wenn du so in diese Wahrheit eingetaucht sein wirst, dass du nicht so nachdrücklich zu fragen brauchst, wir du es jetzt tust … dann, lieber Bruder, werden dies die Zeichen sein, dass ich in allem Ruhm und Herrlichkeit zurückgekehrt bin.“

El sentido de ver la Tierra desde afuera de la Tierra

Los últimos siglos se han caracterizado por incontables descubrimientos: continentes, pueblos originarios, especies de seres vivos, galaxias, estrellas, el mundo subatómico, las energías originarias y últimamente el campo de Higgs, especie de fluido sutil que impregna el universo; las partículas virtuales al tocarlo reciben masa y se estabilizan. Pero todavía no habíamos descubierto la Tierra como planeta, como nuestra Casa Común. Fue necesario que saliésemos de la Tierra para verla desde fuera y entonces descubrirla y constatar la unidad Tierra-humanidad.

Este es el gran legado de los astronautas que tuvieron la posibilidad de contemplar la Tierra desde el espacio exterior por primera vez. Produjeron en nosotros lo que se ha llamado el Overview Effect, es decir, «el efecto de la visión desde arriba». Frank White recogió bellísimos testimonios de los astronautas en su libro Overview Effect (Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston 1987). Al leerlos producen en nosotros un fuerte impacto y un gran sentimiento de reverencia, una verdadera experiencia espiritual. Leamos alguno.

El astronauta James Irwin decía: «La Tierra parece un árbol de navidad colgado del fondo negro del universo; cuanto más nos alejamos de ella, tanto más va disminuyendo su tamaño, hasta quedar reducida a una pequeña bola, la más bella que se pueda imaginar. Ese objeto vivo tan bello y tan cálido parece frágil y delicado; contemplarlo cambia a quien lo have, pues empieza a apreciar la creación de Dios y a descubrir el amor de Dios». Otro, Eugene Cernan, confesaba: «Yo fui el último hombre que pisó la luna en diciembre de 1972. Desde la superficie lunar miraba con temor reverencial hacia la Tierra en un trasfondo muy oscuro; lo que yo veía era demasiado bello para ser aprehendido, demasiado ordenado y lleno de intención para ser fruto de un mero accidente cósmico; uno se sentía, interiormente, obligado a alabar a Dios. Dios debe existir por haber creado aquello que yo tenía el privilegio de contemplar; espontáneamente surge la veneración y la acción de gracias; para eso existe el universo».

Con fina intuición observó Joseph P. Allen, otro astronauta: «Se discutió mucho sobre los pros y los contras de los viajes a la luna, no oí a nadie argumentar que deberíamos ir a la luna para ver la Tierra desde allí, desde fuera de la Tierra; después de todo, ésta debe haber sido seguramente la verdadera razón de haber ido a la luna».

Al pasar por esta experiencia singular, el ser humano despierta a la comprensión de que él y la Tierra forman una unidad y que esta unidad pertenece a otra mayor, la solar, y esta a otra todavía mayor, la galáctica; ésta nos remite a todo el universo, el universo entero al Misterio y el Misterio al Creador.

«Desde allá arriba», observaba el astronauta Eugene Cernan, «no son perceptibles las barreras del color de la piel, de la religión y de la política que aquí abajo dividen al mundo». Todo está unificado en un único planeta Tierra. Comentaba el astronauta Salman al-Saud: «el primero y el segundo día, señalábamos hacia nuestro país, el tercero y cuarto hacia nuestro continente, después del quinto día solamente teníamos conciencia de la Tierra como un todo».

Estos testimonios nos convencen de que Tierra y Humanidad forman en realidad un todo indivisible. Exactamente esto fue lo que escribió Isaac Asimov en un artículo en The New York Times del 9 de octubre de 1982 con ocasión de los 25 años del lanzamiento del Sputnik, que fue el primero en dar la vuelta a la Tierra. El título era: “El legado del Sputnik: el globalismo”. Y decía Asimov: «se impone en nuestras mentes reluctantes la visión de que Tierra y Humanidad forman una única entidad». El ruso Anatoly Berezovoy que estuvo 211 días en el espacio afirmó la misma cosa. Efectivamente no podemos colocar en un lado la Tierra y en el otro la humanidad. Formamos un todo orgánico y vivo. Nosotros los humanos somos aquella parte de la Tierra que siente, piensa, ama, cuida y venera.

Contemplando el globo terrestre presente en casi todos los lugares, irrumpe espontáneamente en nosotros la percepción de que a pesar de todas las amenazas de destrucción que montamos contra Gaia, el futuro bueno y benéfico, de alguna forma está garantizado. Tanta belleza y esplendor no pueden ser destruidos. Los cristianos dirán: Esta Tierra está penetrada por el Espíritu y por el Cristo cósmico. Parte de nuestra humanidad ya fue eternizada por Jesús y está en el corazón de la Trinidad. No será sobre las ruinas de la Tierra donde Dios completará su obra. El Resucitado y su Espíritu están empujando la evolución hacia su culminación.

Una moderna leyenda da cuerpo a esta creencia: «Había una vez un militante cristiano de Greenpeace que fue visitado en sueños por Cristo resucitado. Jesús lo convidó a pasear por el jardín. El militante accedió con gran entusiasmo. Después de andar un largo rato, admirando la biodiversidad presente en aquel rincón, preguntó el militante: “Señor, cuando andabas por los caminos de Palestina, dijiste en una ocasión que un día volverías con toda tu pompa y gloria. ¡Se está demorando mucho tu venida! ¿Cuando volverás por fin de verdad, Señor? Tras unos momentos de silencio que parecían una eternidad, el Señor respondió: “Mi querido hermano, cuando mi presencia en el universo y en la naturaleza sea tan evidente como la luz que ilumina este jardín; cuando mi presencia bajo tu piel y en tu corazón sea tan real como mi presencia aquí ahora, cuando esta presencia mía se haga cuerpo y sangre en ti hasta el punto de que no necesites pensar más en ella, cuando estés tan imbuido de esta verdad que ya no necesites preguntar insistentemente como estás preguntando ahora… entonces, hermano querido, esas serán las señales de que he vuelto con toda mi pompa y toda mi gloria.

The Sensation of Seeing the Earth fromthe Outside

The last centuries have witnessed countless discoveries: of continents, original peoples, species of living beings, galaxies, stars, the subatomic world, the original energies and recently, the Higgs particles, a kind of subtle fluid that fills the universe; the virtual particles that when touched, take on mass, and become stable. But we had not yet discovered the Earth as a planet, as our Common Home. We had to go beyond the Earth so as to see her from the outside, and then discover her and confirm the unity that is Earth-humanity.

That is the great legacy of the astronauts who were first able to see the Earth from outer space. They produce in us what has been called the Overview Effect, that is, «the effect of the vision from above». Frank White gathered very beautiful testimonies of the astronauts in his book Overview Effect (Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1987). Reading those testimonies impact us tremendously, and produce a feeling of great reverence, a true spiritual experience. Let’s read some.

Astronaut James Irwin said: «The Earth looks like a Christmas tree hung on the black backdrop of the universe; the further we go from her, the more she diminishes in size, until she is reduced to a small ball, more beautiful than anyone could imagine. That a living object so beautiful and so warm appears so fragile and delicate changes those who contemplate that beauty, because one starts to appreciate the creation of God and to discover the love of God». Another, Eugene Cernan, confessed: «I was the last man to set foot on the Moon, in December of 1972. From the lunar surface, I looked with reverential fear towards Earth, against a very dark background. What I saw was too beautiful to be grasped, too ordered and filled with intention to be the result of mere cosmic accident; one felt, deep inside, moved to praise God. God must exist, for having created that which I had the privilege to contemplate; the veneration and thankfulness surged spontaneously; for that the universe exists».

With fine intuition Joseph P. Allen, another astronaut, observed: «There was much discussion of the pros and cons of going to the Moon, but I heard no one say that we should go to the Moon in order to see the Earth from there, from the outside; that, after all, should have been the true reason for going to the Moon».

Through this singular experience, the human being awakens to the understanding that the human being and the Earth form a unity, and that this unity is part of a greater one, the solar unity, and this of another, still larger one, the galactic. This sends us to the whole universe, and the whole universe to the Mystery and from the Mystery to the Creator.

«From above», astronaut Cernan observed, «the barriers of skin color, religion and politics that divide the world here below cannot be seen». Everything is unified in one single planet, the Earth. Astronaut Salman al-Saud commented: «the first and the second day, we would point out our countries, on the third and fourth, our continents, and after the fifth day we were aware only of the Earth as a whole».

These testimonies convince us that in reality, Earth and Humanity form an indivisible whole. So much beauty and splendor cannot be destroyed. As the Christians would say: This Earth is penetrated by the Spirit and by the Cosmic Christ. Part of our humanity has already been made eternal by Jesus, and is in the heart of the Trinity. It will not be on the ruins of the Earth that God will complete the divine work. The Resurrected and His Spirit are pushing evolution towards its culmination.

A modern legend gives substance to this belief: «Once upon a time there was a Christian Greenpeace militant, who was visited in his dreams by resurrected Jesus, who invited him to walk in the garden. The militant accepted with enthusiasm. After walking for a long while, admiring the biodiversity in that little space, the militant asked: “Lord, when you walked the paths of Palestine, you once said that you would return one day in all your pomp and glory. Your return is being delayed too much! When will you in fact return at last, Lord?” After some moments of silence that seemed like an eternity, the Lord answered: “My dear brother, when my presence in the universe and in nature are as evident as the light that illuminates this garden; when my presence under your skin and in your heart are as real as my presence here now, when this presence of mine becomes flesh and blood in yourself, to the point that you will not need to think about it anymore, when you are so imbued with this truth that you will not need to ask insistently, as you are doing now… then, dear brother, those will be the signs that I have returned with all my pomp and glory.”»

L’effetto di vedere la Terra dal di fuori della Terra

Gli ultimi secoli si sono distinti per un’infinità di scoperte: continenti, popoli indigeni, specie di esseri viventi, galassie, stelle, il mondo subatomico, le energie originarie e adesso il campo Higgs, una specie di fluido sottile che pervade l’universo; le particelle virtuali, toccandolo ricevono la massa e si stabilizzano. Ma non avevamo ancora scoperto la Terra come pianeta, come la nostra casa comune. Ci è voluto che uscissimo dalla Terra per vederla dal di fuori e a questo punto scoprirla e costatare l’unità Terra-Umanità.

È il grande lascito degli astrronauti, che hanno avuto per primi l’opportunità di contemplare la terra a partire dallo spazio celeste. Hanno prodotto in noi quello che fu chiamato EFFETTO OVERVIEW, cioè effetto della Visione da Sopra. Bellissime testimonianze di astronauti sono state raccolte d aFrank White nel suo libro Overview effect (Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston 1987). Esse producono in noi un forte impatto e un grande sentimento di riverenza, una vera esperienza spirituale. Leggiamo qualche testimonianza.

L’astronauta James Irwin diceva: “la Terra ci ricorda um albero di Natale, appeso al fondo buio dell’universo; quanto più ce ne allontaniamo, tanto più va diminuendo la sua grandezza finché non si riduce a una piccola palla, la più bella che si possa immaginare. Quell’obiettivo vivo così bello e caldo appare fragile e delicato; contemplarlo muta la persona, perché comincia ad apprezzare la creazionedi Dio e a scoprire l’amore di Dio.

Um altro, Eugene Cernan, confessava:” Eu fui o último homem a pisar na lua em dezembro de 1972; da superfície lunar olhava com temor reverencial para a Terra num transfundo muito escuro; o que eu via era demasiadamente belo para ser apreendido, demasiadamente ordenado e cheio de propósito para ser fruto de um mero acidente cósmico; a gente se sentia, interiormente, obrigado a louvar a Deus; Deus deve existir por ter criado aquilo que eu tinha o privilégio de contemplar; espontaneamente surge a veneração e a ação de graças; é para isso que existe o universo”.

Um altro, Eugene Cernan, confessava: Io sono stato l’ultimouomo a metter piede sulla luna nel 1972; dalla superficie lunare guardavo com timore reverenziale la Terra su um fondo molto scuro. Quello che io vedevo era troppo bello per essee appreso, troppo ordinato e pieno di propositi, per essere frutto di un incidente cosmico; io misentivo interiormente obbligato a lodare dio; Dio deve esistere per fare quelle cose, che io avevo il privilegio di contemplare. Spontaneamente sorge la venerazione e il ringraziamento. Per questo è che esiste l’universo”.

Com fine intuizione, un altro astronauta, Joseph P. Allen, osservò: “Si è molto discusso sui pro e i contro dei viaggi sulla luna; non ho mai sentito qualcuno ragionare e dire che si dovrebbe andare sulla luna per vedere la Terra di lassù, da fuori della terra; dopo tutto, questa è stata sicuramente la vera ragione che ci ha portati sulla luna.

A fare questa esperienza singolare, l’essere umano si risveglia alla comprensione che lui e la Terra formano una unità e che questa unità appartiene a un’altra più grande, a quella solare e questa a un’altra ancora maggiore, quella galattica e questa rimanda all’intero universo e l’intero Universo al mistero e il Mistero al Creatore.

“Da lassù”, osservava l’ astronauta, Eugene Cernan, non sono percepibili le barriere del colore della pelle, della religione e della política che là sotto dividono il mondo. Tutto è unificato dal pianeta Terra. Commentava l’astronauta Salman al-Saud:” il primo e il seconddo giorno, noi indicavamo il nostro paese, al terzo e quarto, il nostro continente; al quinto giorno avevamo coscienza solo della Terra come un tutto”.

Queste tetimonianze ci convincono che la Terra e l’Umanità formano di fatto un tutto indivisibile. Esattamente questo è quanto scrisse Isaac Asimov in un articolo sul The New York Times il 9 ottobre del 1982 per commemorare i 25 anni dal lanccio dello Sputnik, che fu il primo a fare il giro della Terra. Contemplando il globo terrestre, che si trova quase dappertutto, irrompe spontaneamente in noi la percezione che nonostante tutte le minacce di distruzione che abbiamo montato contro Gaia, un futuro buono e benefico, in quache modo è garantito. Tanta bellezza e splendore non possono andare distrutti. I cristiani diranno: la terra è penetrata dallo Spirito e dal Cristo cosmico. Parte della nostra umanità in Gesù è stata eternizzata e sta nel cuore della Trinità. Non sarà sulle rovine dellla terra che Dio completerà la sua opera. Il Risorto e il suo Spirio stanno spingendo l’evoluzione verso il suo culmine.

Uma moderna leggenda dà corpo a questa credenza:”C’era volta um militante cristiano di Greenpeace che fu visitato da Gesù Cristo risorto. Questi lo invitò a fare due passi in girardino Il militante accettò molto volentieri. Dopo parecchio che stavano camminando, ammirando la biodiversità presente in quel posto, il militante domandò: “Signore, quando andavi per i sentieri della Palestina, tu una volta hai detto, che un giorno saresti tornato in pompa magna e gloria. La tua venuta si fa desiderare troppo. Sul serio, quando tornerai, Signore?”Dopo momenti di silenzio che parevano un’eternità, il Signore rispose. “Fratellino mio, quando la mia presenza nell’universo e nella natura sarà così evidente, quanto la luce che illumina questo giardino; quando la mia presenza soto la tua pelle e nel tuo cuore sarà così reale , quanto la mia presenza qui e adesso; quando questa mia presenza vivente sarà corpo e sangue in te, al punto che non ti occorrerà peensare ad essa; quando non domanderai più insistentemente come fai adesso, allora fratellino mio caro sara segno che sarò tornato in pompa magna e GLORIA.
