Dear Pope Francis:

Many of us in Latin America, the Caribbean, and in other parts of the world are following with concern the opposition and attacks against you by a conservative but powerful minority in and outside the Church. Perplexed, we have witnessed something unheard of in recent centuries — a stand taken by some cardinals against your way of conducting the Synod and, most of all, the universal Church.

A strictly personal letter addressed to you was leaked to the press, as happened with your encyclical Laudato Si’, in clear violation of the principles of ethical journalism.

Such groups posit a return to the model of Church of the past, conceived more as a closed fortress than as “a field hospital always open to welcome those who knock at her doors,” a Church that should “seek to welcome humankind today not with closed doors, which would betray herself and her mission, and that instead of being a bridge, would become a barrier.” These were your brave words.

The pastoral attitude of the kind of Church proposed in your speeches and in your symbolic gestures, is characterized by warm love, by a living encounter between people and with Christ present among us, by mercy without limits, by the “revolution of tenderness,” and by pastoral conversion. This implies that the pastor has a “sheep smell” because he lives with them and accompanies them along the way.

We regret that the most such groups do is say “no.” We remind our brothers of the most obvious things in Jesus’ message. He didn’t come to say “no.” On the contrary, he came to say “yes.” Paul in the Second Letter to the Corinthians reminds us that “the Son of God was always ‘yes,’ because all of God’s promises are ‘yes’ in Jesus.” (2 Cor. 1:20)

In the Gospel of John, Jesus states explicitly, “If anyone comes to me, I will not send them away.” (Jn. 6:37) It could be a prostitute, a leper, a fearful theologian like Nicodemus – he welcomed everyone with love and mercy.

The basic characteristic of the God of Jesus, “Abba,” is His limitless mercy (Lk. 6:36) and His preferential love for the poor, the sick, and sinners (Lk. 5:32, 6:21). Rather than founding a new religion with the pious faithful, Jesus came to teach us to live and carry out the central message of the Kingdom of God whose properties are love, compassion, forgiveness, solidarity, hunger and thirst for justice, and the joy of everyone feeling like the beloved sons and daughters of God.

The attempts to delegitimize your way of being Bishop of Rome and Pope of the universal Church, being guided more by charity than by canon law, more by collegiality and cooperation than by the solitary exercise of power, will be in vain because nothing resists goodness and tenderness, of which you have given us a splendid example. From history, we learn that where power prevails, love disappears and mercy becomes extinct, core values of your preaching and of Jesus’.

In this context, given the new planetary phase of history and threats to the life-system and system-Earth boldly pointed out in your encyclical Laudato Si’ on “care for our common home,” we want to close ranks around you and show our full support for you and your ministry, your open pastoral vision of the Church and the charismatic manner through which you makes us feel like the Church is our spiritual home again. And there are many from other denominations and religions and in the secular world who support and admire you for your way of speaking and acting.

It is not insignificant that most Catholics live in the Americas, in Africa, and in Asia where one notes great vitality and creativity in dialogue with the different cultures, showing various faces of the same Church of Christ. The Catholic Church today is a Third World church since only 25% of Catholics live in Europe. The future of the Church is being decided in these regions where the Holy Spirit is blowing strongly.

The Catholic Church can not remain hostage to Western culture which is a regional culture, however great the merits that it has accumulated. It is necessary for it to de-westernize, opening up the process of globalization which favors the meeting of cultures and spiritual paths.

Dear Pope Francis: You share the fate of the Master and the Apostles who were also misunderstood, maligned and persecuted.

But we are calm because we know that you take such tribulations in the spirit of the Beatitudes. You bear them with humility. You ask forgiveness for the sins of the Church and follow in the footsteps of the Nazarene.

We want to be by your side, supporting you in your liberating gospel vision of the Church, giving you courage and inner strength to refresh for us, through words and gestures, the tradition of Jesus, made of love, mercy, compassion, intimacy with God and solidarity with suffering humanity.

Finally, dear Pope Francis, continue to show everyone that the gospel is good for all humankind, that the Christian message is an inspirational force in the “care for our common home,” generating a bit of anticipation of an Earth reconciled with herself, with all human beings, with nature, and especially with the Father who has shown a Mother’s traits of infinite goodness and tenderness. In the end, we can say together, “all is very good” (Gen. 1:31).

Lieber Papst Franziskus,

Lui non è venuto a dire no. Al contrario Lui è venuto a dire sì.

Letter of support to Pope Francis

Letter of support to Pope Francis

He didn’t come to say “no.” On the contrary, he came to say “yes.” Paul in the Second Letter to the Corinthians reminds us that “the Son of God was always ‘yes, because all of God’s promises are ‘yes’ in Jesus.” (2 Cor.

Another way of resolving conflicts

Humanity has always seen conflicts of every type, especially under patriarchy. The predominant means of resolving them has been, and still is, the use of violence, to defeat the other and subjugate him to some lower order. That is the worst of paths, because it leaves in the vanquished the taste of bitterness, humiliation and a desire for revenge. And this perpetuates the spiral of violence that, especially today, takes on the form of terrorism, the expression of revenge of the humiliated. Could this be the only way for human beings to resolve their conflicts?

There was someone who considered himself “God’s madman” (pazzus Dei), Francis of Assisi, who could also be the present Francis of Rome, who sought another way. The previous path was one of win/lose. The new one, the win/win path, removes the bases of the bellicose spirit. Let’s take examples from the practice of Francis of Assisi. His usual greeting was to wish everyone: “peace and good”. He asked of his followers: “Anyone who comes, friend or foe, thief or bandit, greet him with kindness” (Regla no bulada, 7).

Let us consider Francis’ strategy regarding violence. Let’s take two legends, that, as legends, express the spirit better than the letter of the facts: the thieves of the Hamlet of San Sepolcro and the Wolf of Gubbio (Fioretti, c. 21).

A band of thieves used to hide in the woods and rob the passers-by of the neighborhood. Moved by hunger, they went to the hermitage of the friars to ask for food. They were welcomed, not without remorse, by the friars: “It is not right that we give charity to this band of thieves who cause so much evil in this world”. They brought the question to Francis; who suggested the following strategy: take bread and wine to the woods, and shout to them: “Brother thieves, come here, we are brothers and we bring you bread and wine” ―they happily eat and drink―, then talk to them about God, but do not ask them to abandon the life they lead because it would be to ask too much; only ask them that when they assault to not cause the person harm. Another time, Francis counsels: “Bring them something better: cheese and eggs”. Happier, the thieves rejoice, but listen to the exhortation of the friars: “Leave this life of hunger and suffering, stop thieving, convert to work because the good God will provide what is necessary for the body and for the soul”. The thieves, moved by such goodness, leave that life and some of them even become friars.

Here the finger, ready to accuse and to condemn, was set aside in the name of the warm closeness, and trust in the energy hidden in them to be something other than thieves. It is to overcome the tendency to see things in black and white, that puts goodness on one side and evil on the other. In fact, in each person is hidden a possible thief and a possible friar. With tender affection, the friar hidden within the thief can be rescued. And that is what happened in Assisi.

This strategy of renouncing violence also appears clearly in the legend of the Wolf of Gubbio. that attacked the people of that small town. Once again schematization is overcome: on one side, the “big wolf, terrible and ferocious” and on the other, the people, filled with fear and armed. The two actors whose only relationship was violence and mutual destruction confronted each other. Francis’ strategy was not to seek a truce or an equilibrium of forces ruled by fear. Francis did not take sides with one or the other, in a false Pharisaic attitude: “it is the other who is bad, not I, therefore the other must be destroyed”. Has anyone asked himself whether inside each of us there can be hiding a bad wolf, and at the same time, a good citizen?

The path of Francis was the union of opposites, and to bring the opposites close enough to each other that they could make a pact of peace. Francis went to the wolf and said to him: “brother wolf, you are a bad murderer, and deserve the gallows, but I also recognize that you do so much harm because of hunger. Let’s make a pact: the people will feed you, and you will stop threatening them”. Then Francis addressed the people, preaching: “turn to God, stop sinning. Make sure that there is enough food for the wolf, and that way God will free you from eternal punishment, and from the bad wolf”.

Legend has it that the small town changed its habits. They decided to feed the wolf, and the wolf moved among the people, as if he were a gentle citizen.

There have been those who read that legend as a metaphor for class struggle. That could be. The fact is that the peace that was accomplished was not through the victory of one of the parties, but by transcending the sides and parties. Each one gave in, the gain/gain was realized and peace came, one which does not exist by itself, but that results from a collective agreement between the citizens and the wolf.

Conclusion: Francis did not stimulate the contradictions nor did he remove the dark dimension where hatreds boil. Francis trusted in the humanizing capacity of goodness, dialogue and mutual trust. He was not naive. He knew that we live in the “regio dissimilitudinis”, a world of inequalities (Fioretti, c. 37). But he did not resign himself to this decadent situation. He intuited that beyond bitterness, deep inside each creature there exists a submerged goodness to be rescued. And it was.

The day will come when humans will embrace their cordial and spiritual intelligence, whose biological base was identified by the new neurologists, and which complements the intellectual reason, that divides and atomizes. Then we will have inaugurated the kingdom of peace and concord. The wolf will continue being a wolf, but he will threaten no one.

Aylan Kurdi, the little boy who drowned, makes us cry and think

The little Syrian boy, of 3 or 4 years, lay lifeless on the beach, pale and still dressed in his little boy’s clothes. He was face down, with his head turned to one side, as if he still wanted to breathe. The waves had taken pity on him and carried him to the beach. The fish, always voracious, respected him because they too felt pity for his innocence. Aylan Kurdi is his name. His father could not hold on to them. They were dragged from his hands; and the boys were swallowed by the waters.

Dear Aylan: you were fleeng the horrors of war in Syria, where the troops of President Assad, backed by rich Arab Emirates, sadly supported by forces of Western Europe and the United States, battle the soldiers of the cruel Islamic State, who behead those who refuse to convert to their religion. I imagine you were scared by the sound of the supersonic planes that launched murderous bombs. You did not sleep, for fear that your house would burst into flames and fly through the air.

How many times you would have heard your parents and neighbors say how dreadful are the planes that fly without a pilot, the drones. The drones persecute and chase human beings through the arid hills, and kill them. Wedding festivities, celebrated with great happiness in spite of all the horror, are also bombed, because it is imagined that there must be a terrorist among the guests.

Perhaps you did not imagine that the one who practices such barbarity and is behind all this is a young soldier, who lives in a military barrack in Texas. He sits peacefully in his living room in front of an immense TV screen. By satellite, the screen shows the battle fields of your country, Syria, or Iraq. When the young soldier becomes suspicous, with a simple touch of a bottom, he fires a weapon carried by the drone. The young soldier feels nothing. He hears nothing. He does not even feel pain. On the other side of the world, thousands of kilometers away, 30 or 40 human beings, children as yourself, fathers and mothers like yours, people who have nothing to do with the war, suddenly die. They are murdered in cold blood. Back in Texas, the young soldier smiles, because he hit his target.

Facing the terror that comes from skies and by land, and the dread of being killed or beheaded, your parents resolved to flee. They took the whole family. They were not thinking of looking for a job. They just wanted not to die, or be killed. They dreamed of living in a country where they were no longer scared, a place where they could sleep without having nightmares.

And you, dear Aylan, could happily play in the street with little playmates whose language you did not understand, but that you did not need, because you children have a language that all little boys and girls understand.

You, Aylan, were not able to reach such a place of peace. But now, in spite of all the sadness we feel, we know that you, so innocent, have arrived in a paradise where you can at last play, jump and run everywhere, in the company of a God who was also a child, named Jesus, and who, in order to not leave you alone, has become once again a child. And He will play soccer with you, He will grab a kitten by the neck, and run after after a puppy; you will understand each other perfectly, as if you had been friends forever. Together you will make colored drawings, laugh at the dolls you make and share beautiful stories. And you will feel very happy. And see, what a surprise: with you there will be your little brother who also died, and your mother will be able to embrace and kiss you, as she did so many times.

You did not die, my dear Aylan. You have gone to live and to play in another place, a much better place. The world was not worthy of your innocence.

And now let me think by myself. What kind of a world is this, that frightens and kills the children? Why do the majority of the countries not want to receive refugees from terror and war? Are not these refugees our brothers and sisters who live in the same Common Home, the Earth? These refugees ask for nothing. They only want to live. They want to have some peace and not to see their children screaming with fear, and jumping out of bed with the thunder of the bombs. They are human beings who want to be welcomed as human beings, without threatening anyone. They only want to live in their manner of venerating God and to be clothed the way they have always clothed.

Are not two thousand years of Christianity enough to make the Europeans minimally human, solidarian and hospitable? Aylan, the little Syrian boy lying dead on the beach is a metaphor for the Europe of today: prostrate, lifeless, unable to cry or welcome threatened lives. Have not Europeans heard so many times that the one who welcomes the stranger or the persecuted is anonymously hosting God?

Dear Aylan, may the image of you, washed up on the beach, elicit in us some of the humanity that always lives within us, a shred of solidarity, a tear of compassion that we cannot hold back, with our eyes tired of seeing so much useless suffering, especially of children, like yourself. Help us, we beg you, because otherwise the divine flame that flickers within us may be extinguished. And if that flame dies, we all will drown, because without love and compassion nothing will make sense in this world.

*Leonardo Boff, a Grandfather of a distant country that has already received many persons from your country, Syria, who took pity when he saw your image on the beach and painful tears of compassion escaped from his eyes.
